Superfood powders: How barley grass, spirulina and more can enter your daily life

Green smoothies have long been on the menu at your favourite café, and spinach is even finding its way into smoothies at home. Green drinks and bowls have long been part of our daily lives – but what exactly lies behind terms like ‘superfood’ or ‘green powders’, and how do the different powders differ from one another?

With all these terms – such as superfood powders, smoothie mixes and functional foods – it’s easy to lose track. We’re going to bring some order to your pantry and take a closer look at five examples from the world of superfoods – some of them real classics, others perhaps a bit of a surprise.

When is a superfood considered "super"?

Before we fire up the blender, let’s clarify the most important question: What actually makes a food a superfood? Spoiler: according to the (German) Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, there’s no fixed definition. It’s essentially a term from the food bubble, though it’s been around for over a century. As far back as 1918, a US company coined the term to boost banana sales.

Generally speaking, the term ‘superfood’ is used in the food bubble to describe foods that, in their natural form, are valued for their nutrient density. The great thing is: these can be a wide variety of foods – from seeds such as chia seeds and hemp seeds to berries, grasses and seaweed, which are now a popular part of a varied diet.

Our green favourites right on your doorstep

When this topic comes up, people often picture fruit that’s travelled halfway round the world. Yet there are also some thoroughly underrated local produce that can easily keep up with international trends – without the need for long-distance transport.

Organic barley grass powder

This grass is harvested from the young shoots of the barley plant, before any grain has even formed. After harvesting, the stalks are gently dried and finely ground. In terms of flavour, you can expect an intensely grassy, slightly tart aroma with a pleasant earthy note.

The powder is naturally rich in fibre (around 40g per 100g) and is incredibly versatile – whether in your morning juice or in your smoothie bowl. This makes it a simple addition to your routine and the perfect way to get your day off to a good start.

Organic wheatgrass powder

The ideal alternative for anyone who finds barley grass a touch too strong. Our organic wheatgrass powder is also made from the plant’s young shoots and gently processed immediately after harvesting. Compared to other grasses, it tastes surprisingly mild and subtly sweet. Thanks to this unobtrusive flavour, it’s perfect as a starter powder for green shakes, as it combines wonderfully with fresh fruit.

Organic nettle powder

You probably know stinging nettles more as prickly ‘weeds’ from the garden or as an unpleasant childhood memory. We think the plant is rather underrated and deserves a change of image. When dried and finely ground, it reveals what it’s really made of – a whole host of nutrients! With a whopping 46 grams of protein per 100g and an impressive 19g of fibre per 100g, this powder is a real all-rounder that you can stir straight into soups, dips or vegetable stir-fries without needing thick gloves.

For those who like it colourful: natural colouring with food powders

If you’re looking for a bit of variety in your drinks or desserts and find ‘just green’ a bit boring in the long run, you can easily expand the colour palette in your cupboard. These powders really bring your creations to life.

Blue spirulina powder

Our blue spirulina powder is the secret star of any themed party or your next colourful Sunday breakfast. If you’re feeling a bit of wanderlust, simply stir this bright blue powder into your bowls and drinks. The best bit is that whilst conventional algae often have a very… let’s say ‘seaside’ flavour, this gently extracted powder is completely flavourless. What’s more, this purely plant-based powder provides 46g of protein per 100g.

Organic acerola powder

The fruity contrast to the blue algae: the yellow-orange powder of acerola! This tropical fruit gives your shakes a pleasantly tart, refreshing flavour and, with its vibrant colour, makes for a real eye-catcher.

Turn on the blender, add the superfoods: quick recipe ideas for your everyday life

On their own, pure natural products with no added sugar (they contain naturally occurring sugar) often offer a real taste experience of a… more intense kind. That’s why we love turning them into delicious, colourful drinks. Here are our recipe ideas for you:

  • Blue Spirulina Coconut Cloud: Matcha is is nice but – now it’s all about blue! A creamy, fresh summer drink with coconut water and an extra dose of protein that simply tastes like a holiday.

  • Blue Spirulina Limonade: Thanks to the algae, fizzy lemon water becomes a bright blue party highlight.

  • Celery and Spinach Smoothie with Wheatgrass: Pop some celery, spinach, parsley and wheatgrass powder into the blender – and you’ve got a green, high-fibre smoothie. It’s quick to make and easy to fit into your routine.

  • Acerola-Kefir-Shake: A bit of tartness goes a long way: a zesty, pink-coloured mix of kefir and lemon, which you can sweeten with agave syrup or coconut blossom sugar as required.

Fancy even more creative plant power, but not sure how to fit your daily dose of greens into your day without too much hassle? Find out in diesem Artikel how you can easily sneak more veg into your daily life.

Our superfood verdict

At the end of the day, all powders just mix with water – or with your favourite plant-based drink. Superfoods aren’t magic potions that can make up for an unbalanced diet overnight, but they’re a straightforward and rather colourful addition to your kitchen. Whether you’re boosting your protein intake with nettle powder or giving your bowls a vibrant blue hue: anything goes, as long as it tastes good to you and fits into your daily life. Grab your blender, experiment a bit and add a splash of colour to your routine!
