Why is the peanut called peanut?

The peanut was originally called "ground nut" or ground pea" because it develops under the ground. When peanuts are harvested, they are taken out of the ground and dried. They can then be roasted to obtain an intense aromatic peanut flavour. But that was not enough for us.
