‘Dates’ is the generic term for many varieties – Medjool is one of them. Compared to other varieties such as Deglet Nour, Medjool dates are larger, softer, juicier and have a particularly caramel-like aroma. They are considered the premium variety among dates.
The Medjool date is considered the ‘queen of dates’ – and that's no coincidence. Cultivating, caring for and harvesting this variety is significantly more labour-intensive, which is why they are more expensive than Deglet Nour, for example. They require more time and more manual labour – but they also deliver more flavour!
It is best to store Medjool dates in a cool, dry place. If you haven't eaten them all within a few days, you should store them in the fridge. This will ensure they stay fresh for as long as possible and remain fresh for up to 24 months after harvesting.
Note: If you have stored your dates for a long time, fructose may accumulate on the outside of the fruit. You can recognise this by light-coloured spots. However, the dates are still fresh and can be eaten.
