Where do red lentils come from?

The country of origin of our red lentils is Turkey. In a field, the plant would probably not even catch your eye, because it is neither red, nor particularly conspicuous. The pure cultivation of lentils is quite risky, because the plants are not very stable and easily break down, especially during heavy rainfall during flowering and ripening. For this reason, lentils are usually grown in a mixture with cereals such as barley or oats.

What are the different types of lenses?

There are many different types of lentils. In addition to red lentils, you can find yellow lentils, brown plate lentils and brown mountain lentils.

Are the red lentils gluten-free?

Red lentils do not naturally contain gluten - however, they are usually grown in mixtures with cereals such as barley or oats. This often leads to cross-contamination with gluten-containing cereals. For people with celiac disease or a gluten intolerance, the red lentils are therefore unfortunately not suitable.

How can I prepare red lentils?

You don't need to soak red lentils before cooking. Just wash them briefly and then it's time to prepare. Put them in a pot with twice the amount of water and cook for 10-15 minutes. The cooking time can vary depending on how "mushy" you like them. Finally, add a pinch of salt and spices to taste - and you've got a quick dish!

Rote Linsen

Unsere Roten Linsen stammen aus der Türkei. Meist handelt es sich um geschälte braune Berglinsen mit einem Durchmesser von 3 bis 4 Millimeter. Farblich reicht das Spektrum von blassem Rosa über Orange bis zu leuchtendem Rot. Rote Linsen haben einen süßen und milden Geschmack.

2018 wurden weltweit rund 6,3 Millionen Tonnen Linsen geerntet. Kanada nimmt davon die größte Ernte mit ca. 3,3 Millionen Tonnen ein. Indien ist der zweitgrößte Linsenproduzent und erntete 2018 ungefähr 1,1 Millionen Tonnen. Die Nahrungs-Linsen werden weltweit praktisch überall angebaut. Besonders beliebte Sorten sind Rote Linsen, Tellerlinsen, Berglinsen, Beluga Linsen und Puy Linsen.
