Rice is a central element in many Asian and African cultures. In Madagascar, friendship translates as "rice and water". We knew early on that we needed to have rice in our online shop. Along with classics, such as our basmati rice, jasmine rice and risotto rice, we also like new and tasty alternatives. That's why we now have something special for you: our chickpea flour risoni!

Looks like rice, tastes like pasta

You can call it what you want: the flavourful product is called kritharaki, orzo or manestra in Greece while Italians prefer risoni or risi. It is also often called Greek pasta in other countries. Traditionally, risoni is made from wheat flour semolina and water, but you know we like to try out new things :). We used legumes for our risoni, more specifically, 100 % chickpea flour. This gives the pasta a lot of power, with 3 times more protein than conventional white rice* and 6 times more fibre**! The carbohydrate content is also lower, with 51 g compared to 77 g with regular rice. Convincing on all fronts!

Using risoni pasta as a rice substitute

Preparing risoni is very easy: use 1 litre of lightly salted water for 100 g of risoni. Bring the water to a boil, add the risoni and stir occasionally until you reach the desired consistency (3-4 minutes should be enough). Then drain the pasta and that's it: you have a tasty rice substitute!

It's usual to greet people with the phrase "Have you already eaten rice today?" in countries such as China, Thailand, Nepal, Vietnam and Bangladesh. Have you eaten rice today? Our Risoni have a shelf life of at least 24 months immediately after production, if stored in the best conditions. But keep in mind that this is only the best before date, not the use by date.
Our Risoni made from chickpea flour contains 22 grams of protein per 100 grams. For comparison: In conventional rice you will normally find only 6.8 grams. So you get with the Risoni at the same weight more than 3 times the amount of protein.
On 100 g there are 22 grams of protein, 8.7 grams of fiber and 51 grams of carbohydrates. If you want to know more, take a look at our nutrition table next to or below the product description.
Our Risoni are ready within 3-4 minutes. For every 100 g of product, use one liter of water and a pinch of salt. Boil the water, add the risoni and stir occasionally until you reach your preferred doneness (about 3-4 minutes). Then drain the water, drain the pasta and you have your delicious rice substitute!
For the cold days we recommend you something warm, like Mexican rice or the pumpkin-chickpea curry with rice and cashew nuts. When it's warmer outside, you can prepare a rice salad with vegetables. You can definitely find the right oil in our cooking oils category. But also quick freestyle recipes work great with the Risoni. How about a delicious rice-vegetable pan with egg and chicken (or soy cutlets for the veggies out there).
Yes, our Risoni are below the value of max. 20 ppm and are therefore naturally gluten-free. Possible cross-contamination with cereals containing gluten is excluded, the Risoni can only contain traces of soy and eggs. Nevertheless, we do not label our Risoni as gluten-free, as we do not have official analyses proving the absence of gluten.
Risoni are traditionally made from durum wheat semolina and water. What this means for you is that they look like rice and taste like pasta. Since we like to sneak a little more protein and fiber into your meal, our risoni are made from legumes, more specifically chickpea flour. But don't worry, the taste is still uniquely good!
100 grams of uncooked Risoni contain 365 kcal. You can also read all the nutritional values on the packaging and next to or under the product description.
We use only chickpea flour for our rice substitute, which is also used in dog cookies. The Risoni are therefore not toxic for your pelt nose. If you have any questions about it, we recommend that you seek advise from your veterinarian.
Healthy or unhealthy is always ultimately decided by a healthy and balanced diet. We therefore avoid categorically pigeonholing our products. However, you can use our rice alternative from legumes as a protein-rich supplement in your diet.
